The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has announced its readiness for a seamless rerun of elections in 21 polling units across the state.
GOLDENNEWSNG confirms the rerun, scheduled for February 3, 2024, comes in the aftermath of the Court of Appeal’s nullification of the initial elections in the affected polling units.
In a media engagement held at the commission’s office in Awka on Thursday, Elizabeth Agwu, the state’s INEC resident electoral commissioner, reassured registered voters of their safety during the upcoming rerun elections. Encouraging voters to turn out in large numbers for the House of Representatives rerun election, Agwu emphasized that security would not be an issue, as both personnel and material resources, including security personnel, have been deployed to the election locations.
Agwu pledged that voters’ ballots would be counted, and no one would face intimidation or disenfranchisement. Specifically, she outlined the rerun election details, stating, “The rerun election will take place in 16 polling units at Nanka in Orumba North Local Government Area to determine the winner of Orumba North and Orumba South federal constituency.
Election will also be held in five polling units at Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area to determine the winner of Nnewi North and Nnewi South and Ekwusigo federal constituencies.”
Highlighting the voter registration statistics, Agwu mentioned that there are 97,438 registered voters at the affected polling units in Nnewi North and 161,914 voters in Orumba North. She urged voters not to be compromised, advising them to vote for the candidates who can represent them effectively. Emphasizing the election’s fairness, Agwu assured voters that they would not be intimidated or molested, as ample security measures have been put in place. She concluded by urging voters not to allow themselves to be used as thugs or scapegoats, emphasizing the importance of a free, fair, and credible election process.
