JAMB Cut Off Mark For Industrial Engineering In Nigeria 2023

To study Industrial Engineering in any university in Nigeria, meeting the required JAMB Cut Off Mark is one of the essential requirements. As mentioned in my previous blog post on the Top 10 Most Competitive Courses in JAMB, Engineering courses hold a strong position at number seven.

While Industrial Engineering may not be as popular as other engineering fields like Civil, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, it is still a competitive course to pursue in Nigeria. With over a thousand students applying for Industrial Engineering, only a limited number, around 100, would be admitted into the sole university currently offering this program.

To enhance your chances of admission, having a high JAMB score is crucial. However, there is a minimum JAMB score you must achieve to proceed to the next phase of the admission process.

In essence, there are two aspects to consider when discussing the JAMB Cut Off Mark for Industrial Engineering. The first aspect is the cut off mark that allows you to move on to the next stage, which is the Post UTME enrollment. The second aspect is the JAMB Cut Off Mark that guarantees admission to study Industrial Engineering.

These two aspects are not the same, and it’s important to understand their differences. The first aspect, the JAMB Cut Off Mark for Post UTME eligibility, is the same for all courses within a particular university. On the other hand, the JAMB Cut Off Mark that guarantees admission to study Industrial Engineering can vary among universities and courses.

Now that we’ve clarified the distinction, let’s delve into the details of the JAMB Cut Off Mark for Industrial Engineering.

JAMB Cut Off Mark for Industrial Engineering:

The JAMB Cut Off Mark to participate in the Post UTME for Industrial Engineering is typically 200. However, certain universities like Ambrose Alli University (AAU) may accept a score of 180. Nevertheless, the minimum cut off mark for Industrial Engineering in most universities (excluding private universities) is 180.

Currently, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) is the only university offering Industrial Engineering. The general JAMB Cut Off Mark to be eligible for the Industrial Engineering post UTME at UNIBEN is 200.

Polytechnics may accept lower JAMB scores for Industrial Engineering. So, if you scored lower than the aforementioned cut off marks, you can consider applying to a polytechnic that offers this course.

The likelihood of being admitted to study Industrial Engineering with a JAMB score of 200 or 180 (depending on the university) is quite slim, approximately a 3 out of 10 chance. However, this doesn’t mean that admission is impossible with a score of, for example, 210. Your JAMB Score only accounts for 50% of the admission requirements. The other 50% is based on your performance in the Post UTME, O’ level exams (such as WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB), or both, depending on the university’s grading system.

Therefore, a low JAMB score can be compensated for by a strong performance in the Post UTME or O’ level exams.

Since the JAMB score contributes 50% to the admission requirements, achieving certain JAMB scores can significantly increase your chances of gaining admission, up to 70%.

JAMB Cut Off Mark for Industrial Engineering that guarantees admission:

A JAMB score of 250 or above is considered good for studying Industrial Engineering in any university in Nigeria. With a JAMB score of 250 and above, your chances of being admitted to study Industrial Engineering in your preferred university are quite promising, around 70%.

I will explain the reasons behind this when I discuss how schools calculate the aggregate score for admission shortly.

Calculating Your Aggregate Score for Industrial Engineering:

Different universities, be it federal, state, or private, adopt various methods to compute the aggregate score for admission into the Industrial Engineering department. While some universities use both JAMB and Post UTME scores (such as the University of Benin), others use JAMB and O’ level results (like AAU), and some incorporate JAMB, Post UTME, and O’ level results (e.g., the University of Lagos) to calculate the aggregate score.

Regardless of the pattern employed by your chosen university, your JAMB score will always contribute 50% to the aggregate score. Your JAMB score will be divided by 8 in the calculation.

Here’s an example of how the average score for Industrial Engineering is calculated using your JAMB score:

  • JAMB Score divided by 8, plus Post UTME score divided by 2 (for universities using JAMB and Post UTME).
  • JAMB Score divided by 8, plus Post UTME 30% and O’ level 20% (for universities using JAMB, Post UTME, and O’ level results).
  • JAMB Score divided by 8, plus O’ level results making up the remaining 50% (for universities using JAMB and O’ level results).

From the calculation pattern above, you can see that your JAMB score carries significant weight. Hence, having a high JAMB score is crucial for admission into competitive courses like Industrial Engineering.

If you score 250 in JAMB, dividing it by 8 would give you 31.25. The departmental cut off mark for Industrial Engineering is typically not less than 55 in most universities.

With a JAMB score of 250, achieving the departmental cut off mark would require moderate effort.

In Conclusion:

A JAMB score of 250 and above is considered favorable for securing admission to study Industrial Engineering in any university in Nigeria.
