Software engineering is a highly competitive and sought-after course in Nigerian universities. Understanding the prerequisites and the required JAMB subject combination is crucial for a smooth application process and to avoid any unnecessary mistakes.

Here are the JAMB subject combinations and requirements you should be aware of if you want to study software engineering in any NUC-accredited university or polytechnic in Nigeria:

  1. Duration of Study: Typically, students pursuing software engineering dedicate approximately four years to their studies. However, this is only possible if there are no carryovers.
  2. Eligibility: Software engineering is a science course, and only students from this particular academic background are eligible to take it. It may pose a challenging entrance for some students.
  3. Career Opportunities: Software engineering degrees offer numerous job opportunities, although the field is highly competitive. To increase your chances of employment, it is advisable to graduate with a strong degree.

JAMB Subject Combination for Software Engineering:

To sit for the JAMB UTME exam and apply for software engineering, you must take three mandatory subjects. It is important to note that the minimum JAMB score required for Software Engineering is 180. However, achieving a score of 200 or higher will improve your chances of admission. The three subjects you can anticipate in the JAMB UTME exam are:

  1. Use of English
  2. Mathematics
  3. Physics
  4. One (1) of Biology, Chemistry, Agric Science, Economics, or Geography.

Admission Requirements:

The entry requirements for the software engineering degree program are as follows:

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Requirements: i. English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics are the required subjects for the UTME. ii. Five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology or Agricultural Science, obtained at no more than TWO sittings in the Senior Secondary School Certificate.

Direct Entry Requirements: In addition to the prerequisites mentioned above, the following criteria may also be considered for direct entry admission: i. Two successful completions of the A’ Level with a minimum grade of C in Mathematics, Physics, or Chemistry. ii. A National Diploma in Software Engineering with at least an Upper Credit from an accredited Polytechnic or its equivalent. iii. NCE with a minimum credit pass in Software Engineering and Mathematics, Software Engineering and Physics, or Mathematics and Physics.
