List Universities Not Under ASUU in Nigeria

In Nigeria, while most universities operate under the purview of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), there are also institutions that do not fall under the umbrella of ASUU. These universities, predominantly privately owned, do not rely on government funding for salaries and other financial support. Consequently, they do not participate in ASUU strikes. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind private universities not going on strike and provide a comprehensive list of universities not affiliated with ASUU, including federal, state, and private institutions.

Why Do Private Universities Not Go On Strike?

Private universities are not bound by the agreements reached between ASUU and the federal government in 1999. As a result, they are not subject to the same grievances and disputes that often lead to strikes in public universities. Private universities operate under different management structures, financing models, and labor arrangements, which provide stability and minimize the likelihood of industrial actions.

Universities Not Under ASUU:

  1. Federal Universities Not Under ASUU: As of now, all federal universities in Nigeria operate under the purview of ASUU. There are no federal universities exempt from ASUU’s membership.
  2. State Universities Not Under ASUU: Among state universities, only a few are not affiliated with ASUU. These include:
  • Delta State University (DELSU)
  • Rivers State University
  • Anambra State University

Please note that the status of some state universities regarding ASUU membership may change, so it is advisable to verify the current situation.
