Newly promoted Leeds gave Premier League champions Liverpool a real scare in their season opener as they fought valiantly in a thrilling 4-3 loss at Anfield.
Mohammed Salah was the hero for the reds scoring a hat trick, two from the penalty spots, but Liverpool were continuously pegged back by a ruthless Leeds who returned to the top flight after a 16 years absence.
Salah put Liverpool in front from the spot inside four minutes after Leeds Robert Koch handled in the box. The lead didn’t last long as it took only eight minutes for Jack Harrison to net the equaliser.
In a match full of defensive errors, Virgil Van Dijk restored Liverpool’s lead in the 20th minute with a towering header, but it was the defender’s slip in the 30th minute that allowed Patrick Bamford to level for 2-2.
Salah then restored the lead just before half time in the 32nd minute with a spectacular strike for 3-2. But Leeds were not done yet and equalised yet again through Mateusz Klich.
They were perhaps unfortunate not to get a deserved draw when they conceded a late penalty which allowed Salah complete his hat trick striking the ball home in the 88th minute for an entertaining 4-3 scoreline.
