Abuja, August 21, 2025 — The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced fresh guidelines for the disbursement of upkeep loans to students, making it strictly tied to each institution’s academic calendar.
According to the directive, students will only be entitled to upkeep loans for their current academic session. Once a school’s academic year ends, upkeep disbursements will automatically stop. This means students who move into a new academic year will no longer be eligible to receive funds from the previous session.
Students must apply at the start of each academic session
NELFUND stated that all interested loan applicants are now required to apply at the beginning of every academic session in order to access both institutional charges and upkeep loans for that year.
To ensure transparency, the NELFUND loan portal is being upgraded to reflect the new rules. Going forward, the portal will only display upkeep loans already collected by each student within the relevant session.
Institutions must upload calendars promptly
The agency further directed universities and other institutions to upload their academic calendars and sessional information on time, so that students can access the full upkeep benefits due to them for the entire academic year.
Mrs. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications at NELFUND, signed the statement, noting that the reforms are designed to guarantee accuracy, transparency, and accountability in the loan process.
She reassured stakeholders of NELFUND’s commitment to providing accessible and efficient financial support to Nigerian students, while urging schools and students to cooperate with the new system.
