Following its resolve to put the State in limelight, the Niger State government has on Friday said it has given directives for the reintroduction of sports and literary activities in all Primary and Secondary schools across the State.
While disclosing this at the award ceremony for Outstanding students of Public and Private Schools in Sports, Quiz and Debate Competition from 2019 to 2023, the Commissioner of Education, Hannatu Jibrin Salihu said henceforth students who are outstanding in various extra curricular activities would be rewarded.
According to her “this is part of our effort to catch them young and identify those gifted in various areas; our aim is to bring back the past glory where sports, quizzes and debate competitions were seen and encouraged to be part of school activities.
“In order to develop the total child, We must give a place to the performance and participation of our children in the field of physical development and expressive literary activities.
“What we are doing today is to celebrate our learner’s participation and outstanding performance in sports, quiz, debate.”
She added that the Ministry of Education is working in two directions to bring back the culture of sporting and literary activities by resucitating School clubs and societies; and to implement measures that would increase our capacity to organize sporting and literary competitions.
One of the outstanding students, Miss Love Yeesuf of St. Clement Secondary School, while commending the State Government said determination, prayers and hard work were the key factors that played out for their success.
While urging students to take extra curricular activities seriously, Miss Yeesuf added that she is motivated to give her best in the future.
Students from St. Clement, Father O’Connell, Zarumai among others won Basketball, 5-Aside football, debate and quiz competitions both at Zonal and national levels.
