Since the dreaded coronavirus was confirmed in Nigeria, the Presidential task force on covid19 and the Nigerian Center for Disease Control NCDC have been giving daily briefings to members of the public on the progress that have been recorded against the covid19 pandemic in the country.
They were also giving statistics on the spread of the virus in the country. It is the statistics that they provided that guided the government’s decisions on handling the pandemic. On Sunday 22nd June 2020 the NCDC announced that the total number of Nigerians that have tested positive for Covid19 has reached 20,000.
The number of Covid19 related deaths has also passed 500. Lagos the most densely populated state in Nigeria had the highest number of infections. Since the lockdown was eased people have been going about their normal duties and many even think that the pandemic is a hoax.
But the reality is that many people numbering up to 500 have died from Covid19 since the first case was reported. Daily cases being reported is also on the rise raising fears that the total number of infected people in Nigeria may reach 50,000 by the end of 2020.
The Nigerian government has ruled out the possibility of another lockdown and most public places like churches, mosques, cinemas planning to reopen. However, the government may be forced to declare another lockdown if there is any geometric increase in the number of people infected.
The corona virus cases have also been on the rise globally with a few countries succeeding in flattening the curve. However, the media is now shifting attention from the pandemic. making people and governments around the world to be relaxed while people are dying.
China which was once the epic center of the pandemic has also recorded a new wave of infection after it returned to normal life.
