The Supreme Court has officially released the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the December judgment concerning Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed that the apex court has assured the forwarding of Kanu’s case file to the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday.
Ejimakor stated on his X handle that the legal teams of Kanu and the federal government would soon engage at the Federal High Court.
In a post on a microblogging platform, Ejimakor wrote, “Today, the Supreme Court released the CTC of its judgment in ‘Federal Republic of Nigeria versus Nnamdi Kanu’. The Court also promised to transmit the case file to the Federal High Court by tomorrow. Sooner than later, we shall lock horns at the Federal High Court to #FreeMNK.”
Recalling events from December 2023, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal for Kanu’s release and overturned the Appeal Court’s ruling in Abuja that had previously acquitted Kanu of all terrorism charges. The Supreme Court directed the transfer of Kanu’s case back to the Federal High Court in Abuja for further trial. Despite criticizing the Nigerian Government for the extraordinary rendition of Kanu from Kenya in June 2021, the court’s delay prompted Kanu’s legal team and IPOB to exert pressure for the release of the Certified True Copy and the transfer of the case file to the lower court.
