NYSC Exemption Letter: Requirements And How To Get It

 

It’s common knowledge that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is a mandatory one-year service program for graduates of Nigerian higher institutions. However, there are circumstances that may exempt certain graduates from participating in the scheme, such as health or age limitations. Eligibility for NYSC Exemption Letter:

To determine your eligibility for the NYSC certificate of exemption, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Full-time students who are over 30 years of age at the time of graduation.
  • Part-time students.
  • Individuals who have served in the Nigerian Armed Forces for more than 9 months.
  • Recipients of national awards like the “Order of the Niger” or other national honors.

How to Apply for NYSC Exemption Letter:

Visit the nearest NYSC State Secretariat and request to apply for an NYSC exemption letter. You will be given an application form to fill out and must attach the required documents when submitting your application.

The required documents include:

  • Completed application form.
  • Documents showing academic qualifications.
  • Approved result.
  • Applicant’s identity document.
  • Supporting documents (as instructed).

After submitting the application and supporting documents, you will need to pay the fee prescribed by the NYSC authorities.

Once the payment is made, your application will be forwarded for verification and validation. You will be notified when the exemption letter is ready for collection. However, you will be required to collect the certificate from your tertiary institution.

How to Register for NYSC Exemption Letter Online:

Graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) are eligible to apply for the NYSC exemption. Follow these simple steps to print your NYSC exemption letter:

  • Visit the official NYSC registration portal at https://portal.nysc.org.ng/nysc4/.
  • Sign up using a valid email address (if you are registering for the first time, click on “Registration for Mobilization”).
  • Confirm the creation of your account by clicking on the activation link sent to your email.
  • Fill out your details in the provided fields.
  • Click on the submit button.
  • Capture your biometrics (this should be done personally and not by proxy).
  • Upload a clear passport photograph with an off-white background.
  • Preview your registration form to ensure the details are correct.
  • Agree to the registration terms and conditions.
  • Upload your scanned signature or sign using a digital signature scanner.
  • Click on submit.

Note: Keep your login details for future use.

  • You will be required to make a payment for the procedure. Select your preferred payment method on the portal to continue.
  • Complete the required payment. The fee is usually less than N3,000.
  • Check your NYSC dashboard to see if your exemption letter is available for immediate printing. If not, check again after a few days and then proceed with the printout.
