The political climes in Edo state are currently charged as the state Governor Godwin Obaseki has been received by a mammoth crowd of supporters at the Peoples Democratic Party’s secretariat in Benin city Edo state. The governor had been making wide consultations with key leaders of the PDP in Rivers state, Akwaibom and within Edo state on his intention to decamp.
The need to find another platform to actualize his second term bid become very important after the crises between Governor Obaseki and the former chairman of the All Progressives Congress Adams Oshiomhole became complex.
The former chairman of the APC fought tooth and nail to deny Obaseki a second term ticket on the platform of the APC. His plans worked and the governor was disqualified by the screening committee of the APC. But that was not all as the governor had a plan B.
Just hours after the disqualification, the Peoples Democratic Party postponed its governorship primary in anticipation of governor Obaseki’s defection and it happened. The house of the All Progressives Congress seems to be in disarray following the removal of its national chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
Obaseki did not want to risk any return to the primaries or the screening tale of the APC or fear of being manipulated by loyalists of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. His triumphant entry into the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday has marked a shift in paradigm in the politics in Edo state.
The governorship election in Edo state is scheduled to hold in September 2020 and more intrigues are on the way. The APC is a very strong party and it will do all it can to retain Edo state.
For now, it does not have any state in the south-south states of Nigeria following the defection of governor Obaseki of Edo state. The only state that it controls is Imo State following the court judgment which removed the PDP from power.
