The Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project, (SERAP) has threatened to sue the President Bola Tinubu-led government if the Nigerian Police does not immediately release the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Joe Ajaero.
Goldennewsng had earlier reported that Mr Ajaero was on Wednesday, arrested in Imo state shortly after the workers commenced a demonstration against the unfair treatment meted out to the state workers by the Imo state government led by Governor Hope Uzodinma.
Ajaero in a tweet via its official X handle on Wednesday, the rights organisation warned that it would take legal actions against the Tinubu-led government if the police failed to immediately release Mr Ajaero.
“The Tinubu administration should immediately release the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, allegedly arrested today in Owerri, Imo State. We’ll take legal action if the authorities fail to release him immediately,” the post by SERAP read.
Goldennewsng recalls that Amnesty International had earlier condemned the arrest of the union’s president suggesting that the arrest undermines workers’ right to organize, engage in collective bargaining, and conduct industrial action.
Recall that Ajaero, had while calling for the demonstration explained that the strike was a protest against the government led by Hope Uzodinma’s discriminatory treatment of Imo State workers.
