The former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, has officially resigned from the party. Okupe made this announcement in a letter released to Vanguard on Monday.
In the letter, Okupe explained the circumstances leading to his decision, citing an ideological conflict between his rightist and Liberal Democrat principles and the left-of-center ideology of the Labour Party. He expressed gratitude to the party, especially the leadership, for providing a platform for him, Mr. Peter Obi, and others to contest the 2023 Presidential Elections after leaving the PDP.
Okupe acknowledged the cordiality and respect accorded to him as the Director-General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization. Despite their efforts, he noted the election loss, making it challenging for him to remain in a party ideologically rooted on the left of the center, given his lifelong affiliation with rightist and Liberal Democrat principles.
In concluding his resignation letter, Okupe thanked the party leadership, wished them success in future endeavors, and expressed his intention to continue his political activities with liberalism, sincerity, and freedom.
This move follows Okupe’s earlier withdrawal from the campaign of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, in 2023. Okupe, aged 70, shared his resignation announcement via his well-known Twitter handle on Tuesday evening.
