The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has called on the Federal Government to speed up the completion of the Dasim Dam to mitigate the flood from the Lagdo Dam.
In a Communique signed after the third session of the fifth synod with the theme: “Thou mighty man of valor: A clarion call to the church” (Judges 6: 9-14) which held at St Peter’s Anglican Church, Bomadi and presided over by the Bishop of Western Izon Diocese of the Anglican Communion in Bomadi, Rt. Rev. Victor Ebipade Okporu, the federal government was advised to dredge the Lower Niger River and Canals around the communities.
While commending the Delta and Bayelsa State Governments for the timely provision of palliatives (cash payments and Buses) to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy, the Synod called on the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs to ensure a fair distribution of palliatives to affected communities.
In the communique, the Synod also called on the Federal Government to urgently take steps to reactivate and maintain the nation’s refineries to help cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal.
“There is the urgent need for the Federal Government to rehabilitate the areas of the East-West Road that were damaged by flood, especially the Evwreni, Uwheru, Umeh, Mbiama and Ahoada axis.
“We urge the Federal Government to address the issue of fuel subsidy and the consequent hike in prices of goods and services.
“It is very apt in the light of the prevailing circumstances in our society, and the challenging times we find ourselves in our nation, Nigeria”.
While frowning at the ‘’Japa’’ syndrome and brain drain in the country, the Synod calls on the Federal Government to address the immediate and remote causes.
Furthermore, the Synod commended the Delta State Government for intervening in the Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja conflict and for restoring peace in the area.
The Synod session was well attended by Diocesan officials, the Council of Knights, Clergymen and their wives and other invited guests from within and outside the Diocese.
