TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS IN NIGERIA
Tertiary institutions are the third tier among the 3 levels of educational institutions in Nigeria. It is categorized into 3: The universities; polytechnics and; Colleges of Education. In this article I will lay a background on the effects of the Universities in Nigeria.
A university as described by Wikipedia is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research, which awards academic degrees in various academic disciplines. The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means “community of teachers and scholars”. A scrutiny of this definition would mean in lay mans words that a University is an institution whose focus is on ‘RESEARCH’. It is by means of such research, formulas are discovered, problems are solved and issues are resolved with a purpose of adding value to the society and a degree is awarded to such researchers and contributors.
Thus in a nutshell, Universities in a given country should be the birth point of innovations and solutions to problems peculiar to the country in which they are located. Thus in an ideal nation, Nigeria for a case study; should it run into a Pandemic for example, the novel Corona virus. The first institution which is to be consulted ideally by the health sector for solution is the universities for research into the virus with an aim to finding the solution. Unfortunately, our renowned universities are only renowned for it’s degrees and nothing more. Degree holders are unable to make out the essence of their degrees.
