A clash between a task force and commercial motorcyclists, also known as Okada riders, resulted in the deaths of two people in Asaba, Delta State.
The confrontation, which occurred on Monday, prompted the motorcyclists to block the Okpanam road axis in the Midwifery area of Asaba to protest against the fatalities.
In a viral video circulating on social media, protesters were seen obstructing roads while police officers deployed to the scene reportedly opened fire.
The police spokesperson in Delta State, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident in a Twitter post, stating that the protest erupted on Monday morning.
Edafe explained that the dispute between the protesters and the task force escalated, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of two individuals.
He said, “There was a violent protest this morning by Okada riders who had an issue last night with the state task force that led to the death of two persons.
“They mobilized in their numbers this morning destroying properties and beating people, hence our men were deployed to control the situation before it turned into something else.”
