Van Dijk was hurt in a rash challenge by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford in the first half of Saturday’s 2-2 draw.
The Netherlands defender, 29, could not continue and post match had a scan done, along with Thiago Alcantara, who also suffered a knee injury.
Results of the scan shows that Van Dijk suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury which would set him out for about 8 months.
This marks another blow to Liverpool’s title defence having already lost goalkeeper Allison to injury, and now van Dijk and new signing, thiago adds to the list.
Coach Klopp had this to say before the scan
“Virgil played I don’t know how many games in a row, he plays with pain, but he couldn’t play on,” said Klopp.
“That’s not good.”
