Isese Day: Govt Declares Monday Public Holiday
The government of Lagos State has given its approval for a public holiday on Monday, August 21, to celebrate the Isese Day of 2023. This special day is linked to traditional beliefs and customs.
The traditional Isese Day celebration falls on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Similarly, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has also declared August 20 as a public holiday in his state to honor and celebrate the traditional religion there.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, issued a statement on Friday, signed by the Head of Service in Lagos State, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola. This announcement explained that the decision to have a day off for public workers on Monday, August 21, was made to promote our local culture and traditions while safeguarding our heritage.
The statement stated: “To show our commitment to supporting our traditional institutions and promoting our native culture, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has kindly declared Monday, 21st August 2023, as a day off for public employees in the state. Work will resume at 8 am on Tuesday, 22nd August.”
Just as the Traditional Religion Worshippers’ Association in Oyo State (TRWASSO) requested Governor Makinde in 2019 to make August 20 a yearly public holiday for their celebrations, the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs also asked the Lagos Government to officially recognize and declare August 20 as Isese Day holiday in the state.
Meanwhile, in Kwara State, there’s a debate about how Isese Day will be marked this year. Muslim groups and the state police command have cautioned Ifa worshippers against arranging any public events. These groups and the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, believe this practice is idolatry and that the city should uphold Islamic practices.
